On June 15, journalist gained information from Guangxi Academy of Forestry that Guangxi has built the biggest clonal gerplasm gene base of China for pinus massioniana after years effort, collected 1,778 clones and produced 20 tons seeds, realized integration of seed and sapling in four national-level and five district-level improved seed bases, finished planting area of 1.48billion㎡. Total direct economic benefit reaches to 1.045 billion Yuan and indirect benefit to 6.268 billion Yuan.
Pinus massioniana, being as the typical pine tree, is planted widely in populated regions of China. From north to south, its planting area covers provinces of Henan, Shandong and Guangxi, Guangdong, from East through west, cover coastal provinces and Sichuan, Guizhou province, including Yangtze River, Yellow River and Pearl River areas. Pinus massioniana has become the pioneer trees planted on barren mountains and main commercial tree species in southern China, and acted as important raw material in its wide application fields such as constructions, sleeper, jamb, plating, furniture, packing case and wood fiber process. At the root of pinus massioniana, abundant pine oleoresin form, at root and bole and root, poria and mushrooms could be cultivated, from the bark, tanning extracts could be gained, therefore its economic value is very attractive.
In order to solve the problems caused by incomplete breeding seed system, ineffective genetic improvement and good quality seeds supply shortage of pinus massoniana in the past, realize the goal of building high effective and sustainable breeding seed system, Guangxi Academy of Forestry has researched together with Experimental Center of Tropical Forestry, Chinese Academy of Forestry, Forestry Scientific Institute of Nanning City, Seed Garden of Damangjie Hill of Teng Conuty, Huashan Forest Farm of Huanjiang County, Zhenlong Forest Farm of Heng County, Qintang Forest Farm of Guigang City and State Own Forest Farm of Paiyang Hill of Guangxi for nearly 30 years, fulfilled a serial important achievements on fields such as making multiple generation breeding strategy, building breeding tech system, choosing and keeping genetic resources, establishing breeding population system, innovating genetic resource, cultivating and selecting good quality seeds, building breeding experiment and production base, promoting application for high quality seeds, and got three patents for invention, built three advanced hybrid generation breeding gardens and fourteen improved seeds.
