The world championship in spaghetti bridge building named RECCS was organized by the Óbuda University. The competitions in spaghetti bridge building have been organized for several decades by engineering faculties in Hungary and abroad, and this year, once again, with the supporting expertise of the Loctite brand.
Building a spaghetti bridge might appear a relatively easy task, but building a robust and aesthetical bridge nevertheless requires serious engineering skills. To build a winning spaghetti bridge, which must have outstanding load-bearing capacity, one needs not only skill but also an effective adhesive which bonds the spaghetti pieces together.
RECCS is a prestigious competition organised in Hungary. It is widely regarded as a serious professional challenge in which students compete on grounds of engineering skills, creativity and determination. Entries into the competition are accepted in two categories: classic bridges and supporting structures. The participants build structures of their own design using spaghetti. This engineering students from 9 universities/colleges in 6 countries entered a total of 13 bridges and 12 supporting structures.
The awards went to the three bridges and supporting structures with the highest load bearing capacity, respectively. Additionally, in both categories, the nicest looking design received a Beauty Award and the most novel design earned an Innovation Award.
Sponsors made it possible to bestow additional special prizes to the voitorious teams as wel. The head of a Adhesive Technologies division of Henkel Magyarország Kft., Zsolt Nej was a member of the panel of judges.
This year fifteen bridges or supporting structures passed the 100 kg load test and six passed the 200 kg load test. The winner of the ‘bridge’ category broke at 256.6 kg and the winner of the ‘supporting structure’ category broke at 414.2 kg.
The indispensable adhesive
Loctite, Henkel’s adhesive brand, was a sponsor to the competition just like in the previous year. To build a winning spaghetti bridge, which must be able to bear a great load, one needs not only precise engineering skills but also adhesive which bonds the spaghetti pieces together effectively.
Most teams participating in the competition used the Loctite 3430 epoxy adhesive to build their spaghetti bridges and supporting structures. Loctite 3430 cures in five minutes and is ultra-clear when dry, making it an optimal bonder both structurally and aesthetically.
