The Canadian grocers’ initiative, announced in late June, requires companies to use thermoformed clamshell food containers made from PET and to use labels with adhesives that have been certified by the Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers.
To date, APR has approved seven label/adhesive combinations, five of them from Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials, which is based in Mentor, Ohio.
The four new Avery Dennison products approved earlier this month include:
• 54# semi-gloss Fasson label feedstock paper with an AT-1A acrylic water-borne adhesive, which is designed to help create labels with rich, deep graphics for products stored at temperatures anywhere from minus 65 degrees Fahrenheit to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
• 2.0 Mil Clear BOPP film with S2001 acrylic water-born adhesive.
• 2.6 Mil White BOPP Fasson film with the company’s proprietary S490 emulsion acrylic adhesive.
• TTC thermal transfer-coated paper feedstock with the S490 adhesive.
The test protocol for approving those adhesives—developed by APR in conjunction with the National Association for PET Container Resources—are designed to certify that adhesives work with existing cleaning systems already in place for recycling PET bottles.
