New technology eliminates strong acids and high temperatures in ester production
Kingsport, TN (October 16, 2009) -- Eastman Chemical Company will showcase its award-winning Eastman™ green biocatalytic process at SCC California Chapter Suppliers’ Day 2009 October 22-23 at booth 651. The company will also highlight its portfolio of cosmetic and personal care products, including Eastman AQ™ polymers.
The Eastman™ green biocatalytic process won the 2009 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award, presented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on behalf of the White House. The coveted award recognizes technologies that incorporate the principles of green chemistry into chemical design, manufacture and use.
The Eastman™ green biocatalytic process uses enzymes and closely controlled conditions to make esters, eliminating the high temperature and strong acids traditionally required in their manufacture.
Vital building block in thousands of cosmetic and personal care industry products, esters are used as emollients, emulsifiers, and specialty performance ingredients. Annual cosmetic ester consumption in North America is estimated at more than 50,000 metric tons.
Attendees at the show will also discover the company’s wide range of popular cosmetic and hair care ingredients, including Eastman AQ™ polymers, waterborne film-formers that provide cosmetic chemists great flexibility in developing multifunctional skin care and hair care products.
”From new sustainable process technology to the latest in effective products, Eastman chemists continue to deliver the innovations our customers require in today’s fiercely competitive marketplace,” says Erin Bernhardt, business manager, performance additives, Eastman.
